Singing: Mastery and Mystery

Invitation

Dear Colleagues

On behalf of the National Council of the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Sydney Chapter invites you to join them at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music from 15-18 July, 2004, for the biennial national conference.

ANATS is delighted to bring together this group of fine Australian and international presenters. We invite you to explore aspects of the Mastery and Mystery of singing and the teaching of singing as ideas, artistry and - most of all - practice.

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is one of the oldest music schools in Australia. Situated in Macquarie Street, surrounded by the Domain and Botanic Gardens, it was built in 1817 as stables for Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Between 1997 and 2001, it was extensively remodelled and rebuilt. The result is a wonderful restoration and renovation of the historic castellated building, with the addition of new facilities of outstanding acoustic and architectural quality in which to serve not only the music community and its audiences but also to educate future generations of performers, composers, musicologists and music educators.

Our distinguished keynote speaker, Neil Semer, is based in New York and gives masterclasses and lectures across America and Europe. His visit to Sudney in 2002 was so appreciated by those who attended his workshops that it prompted our invitation to him to join us again. He is a dynamic and articulate teacher who attention to every aspect of his work and that of his students is an inspiration.

Other exciting expert presenters new to Australia are Peter Hunt and Norma Enns.

Peter is well-known in the United Kingdom for his excellent work with young voices, particularly in choirs, and for his publication VOICEWORKS.

Norma Enns is Canadian, with many years experience as a performer, teacher, and professional leader in North America and Europe. Norma is passionate about teaching, and will make a special contribution to our thoughts about teaching singing as a profession.

Presentations range from papers on voice research to plenary sessions, masterclasses, workshops and posters, covering a wide range of topics from early music to running your studio as a business.

The programme has wide appeal, with particular attention given to balancing sessions on contemporary, classical and young voice. Your participation is the final ingredient in three days of quality presentations, exchange of ideas and information, lively discussion, good singing and wonderful entertainment.

We look forward to welcoming you to our city.

Neil Semer

Neil Semer teaches voice and gives workshops internationally on the subject of vocal technique and performance practice.

His main voice studio is in New York, but he teaches regularly in Toronto, London, Paris and throughout Germany as well.

In July-August 2004 he leads the 8th Annual Neil Semer Summer Vocal Institutes in Coesfeld and Aub, Germany. His teaching combines the old Italian School of Bel Canto as expounded by Giovanni Battista Lamperti with scientific understanding of vocal function.

The focus is coordination of the heart, mind and body. His students sing leading roles in Opera around the world and star in Broadway productions.

Innumerable masterdasses given internationally include voice congresses, associations for teachers of singing and universities.

Peter Hunt

Peter Hunt has been associated with singing and teaching singing for many years, as well as playing bassoon, keyboard, and percussion!

He was a founder member of youngchoirs.net in the UK in the mid 1990s and developed ideas for a repertoire handbook to encourage singing.

This was published by OUP in 2001 as VOICEWORKS - a handbook for singing. It was hugely successfully, and VOICEWORKS 2 was published in July 2003. Other titles are in the pipeline.

Peter has gained a national reputation as an excellent workshop leader and now regularly runs singing days for young people, delivers training to school teachers, and has demonstrated at conferences and conventions for all of the major educational and singing organisations in the UK.

Through appropriate repertoire, lively and engaging delivery, and solid teaching skills and techniques, he leaves young people feeling good about singing and wanting more.

Norma Enns

Norma Enns was born in Canada. She completed her B.Mus at Brandon University with a double major in wee and viola, with further studies in opera and concert repertoire in Germany at the University of Music and Drama, Hanover.

She has since had an international career, mainly as a concert singer. She has worked with Ensemble Tart pour Cart since 1985, singing many premiere and first performances of contemporary solo repertoire and chamber music, and has made recordings for radio, TV and CDs for all major European, Asian and Canadian broadcasting companies.

She has had over 25 years of teaching experience at all levels. In 1992 she became Professor of Voice in Hanover.

She has been invited to teach master classes in many countries and is currently vice-president and international representative of the German voice teachers association, Bundesverband Deutscher Gesangspaedagogen, and president elect of the European Voice Teachers' Association, EVTA (2005).
