Singing: Mastery and Mystery
Invitation
Dear Colleagues
On behalf of the National Council of the Australian National
Association of Teachers of Singing, the Sydney Chapter invites
you to join them at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music from
15-18 July, 2004, for the biennial national conference.
ANATS
is delighted to bring together this group of fine Australian
and international presenters. We invite you to explore
aspects of the Mastery and Mystery of singing and the teaching
of singing as ideas, artistry and - most of all - practice.
The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is one of the oldest
music schools in Australia. Situated in Macquarie Street,
surrounded by the Domain and Botanic Gardens, it was built
in 1817 as stables for Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Between
1997 and 2001, it was extensively remodelled and rebuilt.
The result is a wonderful restoration and renovation of the
historic castellated building, with the addition of new facilities
of outstanding acoustic and architectural quality in which
to serve not only the music community and its audiences but
also to educate future generations of performers, composers,
musicologists and music educators.
Our distinguished keynote speaker, Neil
Semer, is based
in New York and gives masterclasses and lectures across America
and Europe. His visit to Sudney in 2002 was so appreciated
by those who attended his workshops that it prompted our
invitation to him to join us again. He is a dynamic and articulate
teacher who attention to every aspect of his work and that
of his students is an inspiration.
Other exciting expert presenters new to Australia are Peter
Hunt and Norma Enns.
Peter is well-known in the United Kingdom
for his excellent work with young voices, particularly
in choirs, and for his publication VOICEWORKS.
Norma Enns
is Canadian, with many years experience as a performer,
teacher, and professional leader in North America and Europe.
Norma is passionate about teaching, and will make a special
contribution to our thoughts about teaching singing as a
profession.
Presentations range from papers on voice research to plenary
sessions, masterclasses, workshops and posters, covering
a wide range of topics from early music to running your studio
as a business.
The programme has wide appeal, with particular
attention given to balancing sessions on contemporary,
classical and young voice. Your participation is the final
ingredient in three days of quality presentations, exchange
of ideas and information, lively discussion, good singing
and wonderful entertainment.
We look forward to welcoming you to our city.
