Special Workshop for ANATS Members with Professor Graham Welch, Sunday, 18 September 2005

March 2005

Most ANATS members will know of the work of Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the University of London, either through the wide range of articles he has published on child voice and music education, or as one of the editors and contributing authors of Bodymind & Voice. Professor Welch will be one of the international keynotes speakers at the:

7th Voice Symposium of Australia, to be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour, from 15 to 17 September 2005

He has agreed to give a full day workshop following the Symposium, on Sunday, 18 September, to particularly address the needs and interests of ANATS members. The AVA and ANATS are negotiating to bring you this workshop at minimal cost, in conjunction with concessional registration fees for the Symposium.

The workshop will focus on two areas:

1) child vocal development;

2) the role of feedback in learning to sing. Professor Welch will present the research in these areas and I will assist him in giving practical demonstrations of applications to singing and the teaching of singing. More details soon!

In the meantime keep 15-18 September free for the Symposium and the Welch workshop.

7th Voice Symposium of Australia

The 7th Voice Symposium of Australia, deliver the voice, will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Sydney, 15-17 September 2005. It features invited speakers Professor Graham Welch, Associate Professor Katherine Verdolini, and Associate Professor Steven Zeitels, offering internationally-recognised expertise in the scientific, artistic and clinical aspects of voice.

Each discipline involved in deliver the voice has insights into the different facets of voice production. This Symposium aims to explore these approaches and so advance the skills, knowledge and practice of allied professions.

There will be stimulating interdisciplinary plenary sessions, concurrent sessions, workshops and exhibitions, focusing on the Symposium themes of skill acquisition, the injured voice, and standards of practice.

The deadline for submissions to present at the Symposium is Friday 8 April 2005.

We'd love to hear from ANATS members wanting to give a paper on their research or present a workshop on a particular approach to the singing voice.

You will find information on how to submit and more details on the Symposium on the website www.deliverthevoice.com.au

Australia Voice Association (AVA)

The last issue of The Voice of ANATS contained a first notice of the Australian Voice Association's 7th Voice Symposium. As a member of ANATS and the current President of the AVA, I extend a warm invitation to you to join the Australian Voice Association. I have found AVA membership an excellent complement to my ANATS membership, introducing me to colleagues from other voice disciplines (theatre voice practitioners, speech pathologists, otolaryngologists, voice psychologists), and giving me some understanding of these disciplines and their methods of working. Symposia provide stimulating discussions and new ways at looking at old problems - and often an introduction to problems I've never thought of!

The AVA is a truly interdisciplinary organisation. It promotes the field of voice in Australia; encourages links between artistic, clinical and scientific disciplines related to voice; promotes education and training in the clinical care of voice, as well as vocal performance and voice science; and actively encourages research in voice. Membership is open to all voice professionals with a clinical, scientific and artistic interest in voice.

The Association was formed in 1991, following a successful inaugural Voice Symposium in Adelaide. Since then we have continued to present biennial Symposia in different Australian cities, featuring leading international and national keynote speakers as well as members' papers and workshops.

Membership entitles you to receive concessional registration for Symposia, workshops, and other events, and subscription to our very own internationally-respected ANATS refereed journal Australian Voice, as well as to the AVA newsletter, Voiceprint.

Do get in touch with me ph 02 9566 4184, jean.callaghan@bigpond.com for a membership application.
