The Pop, Rock & Beyond: Contemporary Voice in Practice workshop, led by Dr. Marisa Lee Naismith, offers a full-day immersive training experience for emerging singers, voice teachers, and studio professionals.
The event is structured into two comprehensive sessions designed to develop technical awareness, stylistic versatility, and practical teaching strategies.
The morning session (10:00 AM–12:30 PM) will engage participants in a group vocal warm-up tailored to emerging voices, followed by an introduction to the concepts of vocal load management and pacing. Attendees will then participate in critical listening and style-mapping activities, identifying stylistic parameters across genres such as pop, R&B, folk, and indie music. This segment will also encourage reflection on common performance hazards faced by young artists.
The session will continue with a focus on repertoire strategy, exploring sustainable song selection, stamina development, and the mapping of text, range, and tessitura for adolescent and beginner singers. The morning will conclude with experiential exercises, including a “Hook to Full Song” progression that bridges studio practice and performance application.
The afternoon session (1:30 PM–4:00 PM) will feature a live masterclass in which secondary school and emerging adult singers workshop repertoire and receive coaching on style, vocal health, and audience engagement. The day will conclude with a wrap-up discussion exploring next steps for voice studios and music educators, with an emphasis on practical, real-world teaching applications.
Led by Dr. Naismith—an internationally recognised CCM pedagogue with more than 45 years of experience—the workshop provides evidence-based, industry-relevant training for contemporary vocal practitioners.
