Many singers work harder than they need to. When vocal fold adduction is inefficient, we often compensate with excess airflow, increased muscular effort, or unnecessary tension. In this engaging webinar, voice-specialised speech pathologist and singing rehabilitation voice specialist Lori Sonnenberg explores how targeted adduction exercises can transform vocal coordination, improve registration, increase vocal efficiency, and reduce compensatory behaviours.
Designed specifically for singing teachers, this session will help participants recognise signs that poor adduction—not simply tension or technique—is contributing to vocal inefficiency. Through clinical insights and immediately applicable exercises, attendees will learn how targeted adduction work can improve vocal tone, stability, ease, and coordination across a wide range of singers and musical styles.
Grounded in contemporary voice science and decades of clinical work with singers, this webinar provides teachers with practical tools to better understand vocal function, recognise common vocal coordination challenges, and make informed decisions in the studio.
Participants will learn to:
Recognize common signs of poor vocal fold adduction
Distinguish healthy closure from pressed phonation (good vs. bad tension)
Understand the relationship between adduction, registration, resonance, and vocal efficiency
Apply practical adduction exercises to improve coordination and reduce compensatory tension
Identify when vocal challenges may warrant referral to a voice-specialised clinician
