Webinar: Preparing for Classical Competitions and Auditions with Roxane Hislop

This webinar will offer a comprehensive overview of the requirements for audition and offer some guidance for preparing for classical singing competitions at the national and international level, led by esteemed singer and educator, Roxane Hislop. The webinar will include a presentation followed by a workshop of video auditions, followed by a question and answer session.


Competitions are an essential element of building a professional career for young classical singers. These events are lucrative and competitive and can offer significant financial and other benefits including overseas travel and coaching. Each competition is different, with different expectations and requirements. Many competitions now require self-taped audition in the first round, or an interview prior to the final event. Some repertoire may be appropriate for one event, but not another.


Roxane Hislop is an accomplished Australian mezzo-soprano and voice teacher with a career spanning four decades. She is a graduate of Sydney University and the NSW conservatorium of Music as well as holding a Master of Arts Administration from RMIT university. Her awards include the prestigious Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship to study in Britain, the Inaugural AIMS Scholarship for study in Austria, the Dame Mabel Brooks Scholarship and the Sydney Sun Aria Award. She represented Australia at the National finals of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in New York, and in 1995 was awarded the Victorian Green Room Award for best female artist in a supporting role for her performances as Maddalena in Rigoletto and Olga in Eugene Onegin.


Roxane has performed over 80 Operatic roles, most of these for Opera Australia.Her extensive repertoire includes the title roles in Carmen and La Pericole, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Dalila in Samson et Dalila , Varvara in Katya Kabanova, Medoro in Orlando, Amastre in Xerxes Cornelia in Giulio Cesare, Erda in Das Rheingold, Siegrune and Rossweisse in Die Walkure and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly. She has also performed extensively with Victoria State Opera, West Australian Opera, Opera Queensland, State Opera of South Australia, Melbourne Opera, and Victorian Opera. Beyond the opera stage, Roxane is a prolific concert artist. She has performed with all the major Symphony orchestras in Australia. Her concert repertoire includes The Messiah, St Matthew and St John Passions, Dream of Gerontius, Missa Solemnis, A Jewish Chronicle, A Child of Our Times, and Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass. She has appeared at the Melbourne Festival, Sydney Opera House New Year's Eve Galas, Australia Day Concerts for the Festival of Sydney, the Melbourne Spoleto Festival, and in solo recital for Musica Viva in Melbourne.


Roxane is deeply involved in the development of the next generation of performers. She currently teaches at the Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne and serves on several artistic boards, including the Opera Foundation for Young Australians and Victorian Opera’s artistic advisory committee. She is a frequent adjudicator for major competitions and eisteddfods and has served on the audition panels for the Herald Sun Aria, MOST Opera Awards, the Lexus Song Quest New Zealand, the Lady Fairfax La Scala Award, the Michael Byrne Vienna State Opera Award, Deutsche Oper Berlin Award and the Lady Galleghan London award.
