Past Event: VIC Chapter - Annual AGM & Styles Day

Trevor Jones will discuss current methods of coaching musical theatre repertoire with classical singers. He will present some of the existing published material on the shifts in vocal technique required for "crossover" singers, as well as discuss a possible structure for preparing musical theatre songs for performance with classical singers.

Katrina Wellins will discuss approaches to teaching contemporary voice including appropriate vocal tone/onset, dynamics - The Australian Idol effect, diction & dipthongs, vibrato - its role in contemporary voice performance and pop belting/mix belting. Language in contemporary voice teaching - is our choice of language potentially misleading?

About the Presenters...

Katrina Wellins is a graduate of the Central Queensland University Conservatorium Music Theatre course and Melbourne University Education, Katrina is involved in vocal education at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. She is currently Acting Coordinator of Voice Studies at Box Hill Institute, alongside a busy private studio. Katrina works primarily with Contemporary Voice covering Rock, Pop, Jazz and Music Theatre, and takes a keen interest in development of healthy vocal technique and sustainable voice use.

Trevor Jones is an educator, cabaret performer, pianist, singer and entertainer based in Melbourne, Australia. He is currently a Music Theatre Lecturer and voice teacher at the Victorian College of the Arts and was previously the Associate Music Director of the Victorian State Schools Spectacular. He is the Artistic Director of CitiOpera and has been the musical director for a number of musicals. Trevor has performed to great acclaim in cabaret venues around Australia including The Butterfly Club where he hosts Trevors' Fab Fridays weekly, and downstairs at the Maj (Perth). He has travelled internationally as a piano bar entertainer, singing and playing in all styles, often by request and was employed in this capacity by Carnival Cruise Lines as well as 5 Star Hotels around Europe. Trevor is also highly sought after as an accompanist, conductor and musical director.
